Carpenter is Named Employee of the Month
Raven Walker

Greensboro, NC - Building walls, repairing signs and changing locks, these are all tasks that happen throughout the district on a regular basis. When it is time to get the job done, our maintenance team deploys one of our skilled carpenters to save the day.

Charles Highsmith is one of those carpenters. A member of Team GCS for seven years, Highsmith keeps a smile on his face for every job, promptly responding to any request or task that is set before him.

Gabrielle Brown, director of media relations, wrote, “Charles Highsmith exemplifies dedication, professionalism, and the collaborative spirit that drives Guilford County Schools forward. As the district’s carpenter, Charles consistently brings a positive attitude and a can-do mindset to every task, often arriving with a smile and a solution in hand. His prompt response to maintenance needs across both the former and new administrative buildings has been instrumental in ensuring safe, functional, and welcoming environments for staff. Throughout our transition to the new district office, Charles has gone above and beyond—addressing facility issues, supporting colleagues, and helping teams adjust smoothly so that we can focus on our shared mission of student success. His reliability, craftsmanship, and care for others make him a true asset to the GCS community.”

Highsmith’s support throughout hectic office transitions is just one of many reasons he earned the nomination for August’s Employee of the Month. With a bit of planning from maintenance, Highsmith thought he was responding to an emergency maintenance request. Instead, he entered a room surrounded by his colleagues, surprised with the good news of his nomination.

Highsmith received a $50 gift card courtesy of the Greensboro Jaycees. During the month of August, his photo will be displayed at the district’s central offices and in the Greensboro Jaycees office.
